OPEN Hairdressing’s Informative Autumn Hair Care Guide is Here!

An autumn hair care routine is often overlooked. Why should we change what has worked for us during the summer? Well, we advise all our clients to pay closer attention to their hair when the leaves begin to brown. Summer gave us beachy and sun-kissed waves and wind-swept looks. On the other hand, those warmer days have undoubtedly taken their toll on your hair without you even noticing. It’s not just during a warmer climate that hazards to our hair health become apparent, but the transition between seasons can undoubtedly change our hair’s condition and appearance.

However, we want to show you with a few small changes to help you get through the colder months. We want to give you the knowledge and confidence that will allow you to take charge of what autumn has to offer. So, without further ado, here are some helpful tips and tricks to secure your locks this autumn:

Smooth that Cuticle!

At the centre of your hair (a.k.a. the cortex) is responsible of the majority of your hair’s strength. A flat layer of overlapping cells protects them and this is known as the cuticle. The hot summer sun, UV rays and time by the pool break makes this layer deteriorate; making your hair more susceptible to breakage and split ends.

To ensure that every strand of hair is cared for, start applying your conditioner by gently combing it through after shampooing. Start at the ends of your hair and simply work your way up. And don’t be afraid to wait a few extra minutes for the conditioner to really work it’s magic!

Avoid Cold Snaps and Split Ends

Split ends indicate that the hair is beginning to fray and thin out. In reality, the only way to get rid of them is to have them cut off. They will continue to split if you don’t notice them straight away. Consequently, they will tend to split further up the hair shaft and even irritate the scalp. Plus hot styling tools and cold winds won’t do your hair much good either.

If you discover that you do have split ends, select a vented brush that reduces the amount of heat exposure. In addition, you should always protect your hair before you straighten, blow dry or curl your hair. Davines’ OI Oil or Bumble and bumble’s Invisible Oil are great choices and can be applied according to your personal styling needs.

Do More with Your Diet

With the sun seeming to take it’s own mini-break during autumn, our vitamin D levels decrease massively. But it’s not all bad news. Eating foods that contribute to healthy hair growth can help your hair survive the months ahead. Even if you take a Bb Prep Primer or a MELU product from Davines after you’ve visited us, food can still underpin your efforts towards gaining better hair.

Become a Soothe Operator

Many of us forget that at the core of good hair health, we have to look after our scalps. Ultimately, no one wants to have flaky and itchy skin – epsecially in colder weather.

For example, our stylists can help you bring summer back with Bumble and bumble’s Seaweed products. Or, they might indulge you with in The Purity Circle Hair Mask from Davines. Both will help to remove the build up of dead skin cells without removing vital oils your hair needs to sustain itself. Whatever your hair concerns are, our stylists will be on hand to show you which products and techniques they’ll use to make your autumn hair routine stress-free and easy.
