Introducing You to One of OPEN Hairdressing’s Top Colourists Tai Walker

I enjoy the fact that each salon is unique

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at OPEN Hairdressing

Towards the end of my school education, I was indecisive. I didn’t know whether to pursue hairdressing, landscape design or being a chef. They were quite different careers but equally creative! However, by the time I was about to leave school, I had a friend who was a stylist at Toni & Guy in Covent Garden who helped me start an apprenticeship there almost 20 years ago.

Like most central London salons, the first part of training consisted of learning the basics of sitting and colouring. Then, I had to make the decision of which career path to go down. Art and science were two subjects that I particularly excelled in, so colour was the natural path for me to take.

I’ve always enjoyed a varied working life, which led me to begin work at Mahogany Hairdressing in London where I had a balance of salon work, education and shows. It gave me the opportunity to travel the globe and ultimately, become International Colour Director at Schwarzkopf.

After 13 enjoyable years, I started to feel the itch for something new – so I jumped the ship. I initially started just a couple of days at OPEN but as demand has grown, I am now working with the team full-time whilst still fitting in some freelance work.

What do you think makes OPEN Hairdressing different to other salons?

The initial feature that stood out to me was that each OPEN has a relaxed atmosphere. The banter between the team and clients, the discussions on the creative work happening whilst still retaining professionalism were other aspects that appealed. Together with the London quality and ethos of hairdressing is what makes OPEN stand out from the rest.

What can clients expect when they have an appointment with you?

I’m a self-confessed perfectionist in my work, always working neatly with a friendly and gentle approach. I enjoy all aspects of colour from natural sun-kissed looks to head-turning colour changes.
